animatronic

adjective

an·i·ma·tron·ic ˌa-nə-mə-ˈträ-nik

: of, relating to, or being a puppet or similar figure that is animated by means of electromechanical devices.

Many believe the true start of the animatronics industry was at the 1939 World's Fair when Westinghouse debuted their speaking, 'breathing', walking, talking robot- Elektro.

However, it wasn't until the birth of Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room in 1963 that animatronics primarily shifted to being a source of amusement.

The transition from "helper robots" to "pre-programmed mechanical entertainment" quickly swept the nation.
